I am amazed and honored at my journey so far. It has been quite a ride. I was born and raised in Atlanta very far from anything "alternative" or "spiritual" in nature. In my family, even Chiropractors were "quacks." I was raised Episcopal, went to church every Sunday, and was in the church choir for 10 years.
Finally in my early 20's after quite a few years of rebellion, I began to question my life. I was in outside sales which I absolutely could not stand. I had no idea how much my life was about to change.
It's so amazing when you can look back and put all the pieces together. One day I woke up with a crick in my neck. After several days of not being able to move it and in a lot of pain, a friend made me an appointment with an massage therapist. When I got there I did not even notice that the door said "Chiropractor and Massage Therapist." He cracked my neck in one direction and I just about died. But, I was way to embarrassed to get up and run out the door. Besides, my neck felt better. So, I continued with the adjustment and filed that experience away somewhere in my head.
Years later, a friend who was in school called me one day and asked if I wanted to go with her to her Chiropractor. Since I was in sales, which for me meant sitting on the couch and watching TV, I went with her. What I did not know was that he was also working on my energy as well. After seeing him for a while, I began noticing how angry I was. I also noticed that no one seemed to be able to live up to my expectations of them. Therefore, I was constantly disappointed in people. So, I asked him. What can I do? I know life can be better than this.
He sent me to a spiritual therapist who had an alternative center in Atlanta. I was so miserable that I decided to go to her even though that meant bucking the system. Well, I loved it. I began taking all the self help type classes that they had available. My friends, however, thought I had gone off the deep end and joined some kind of cult.
I began meeting new people who were taking the same classes. There was one girl in particular who was always in the same classes as I was, so, we started talking on the phone. She, though, also took the beginning reiki class. Right after that, her computer started crashing and she asked if I would come over and fix it and she would trade me a reiki session since she needed to practice. So, I did.
That first session scared me to death. She did not explain a thing and I could feel what she was doing. I wanted to get up and leave, but, she was my new friend and I did not want to embarrass myself. So, I suffered through it. Afterwards, I felt great and continued to feel great the next couple of days. So, I decided to take the reiki classes as well.
I took all of the levels as fast as I could take them. But, I never intended on doing it for a living. I mean really. I had a sales job and was able to keep up with daytime television. My teacher kept telling me that I should practice reiki for a living. I ignored her.
Finally one day, my teacher said to me "I know you think you love your sales job. But, the truth is you don't feel in integrity about what you do for a living." That statement exploded my entire life into pieces that would never come back together in the same way again.
So, I bought a table and started a reiki practice. It only took me about a month before I was able to quit sales. My mom wanted to know if I was doing voo doo. My friends were one step from an intervention. It's funny what time does. Now they all think I have the best job on the planet. And I do.
What an experience I have had. What an opportunity. I get to help people become the people they are meant to be. And I am so grateful to be able to do so.
